A warehouse can contain valuable inventory, equipment, raw materials and business assets worth millions of naira. Yet, after employees leave and the business closes for the day, the facility can become particularly vulnerable to theft, unauthorized access and vandalism.
Simply locking the warehouse doors may not provide sufficient protection. Effective warehouse security requires multiple layers of protection, combining physical security, surveillance, access control and proper monitoring.
If you operate a warehouse, distribution centre, factory or commercial storage facility in Nigeria, here are seven important measures to consider for securing your premises after closing hours.
1. Install CCTV Cameras
Use strategically positioned CCTV cameras to monitor entrances, loading areas, storage spaces, parking areas and other vulnerable points. Remote monitoring can allow you to keep an eye on your property from your phone.
2. Use Access Control
Restrict entry to authorized personnel with biometric systems, access cards or other access-control solutions.
3. Secure Doors and Windows
Use strong locks and reinforced entry points. Don’t overlook emergency exits, windows and secondary entrances.
4. Improve Security Lighting
Adequate lighting around the warehouse and perimeter can discourage unauthorized activity and improve visibility at night.
5. Protect the Perimeter
Depending on your location and risk level, consider electric fencing, razor wire, security gates and perimeter alarms.
6. Monitor After-Hours Access
Keep proper records of employees, visitors and contractors who access the warehouse outside normal working hours.
7. Use Layered Security
The most effective approach combines CCTV, access control, physical security, lighting and perimeter protection rather than relying on a single security measure.
